Queen Latifah feat. Monie Love – Ladies First (Tommy Boy)

OMG!Puré Hip Hop nostalgia . Merci beaucoup mon frère Frédéric dans Paris . As I celebrate Black August ,this birthday tribute for Queen Latifah is on point. Monie Love adds that militant sistA vibe to the then anti-apartheid agenda.

The Complete Muhammad Ali and Black Tokenism with Ishmael Reed

August  is our month of Black Hero celebration as opposed  to the cynically corporate  dominant Black History month of February .

My new Tiger/Tigre platform of commentary boldly challenges snug clichés and lazy and intellectually  /morally/spiritually  bankrupt narratives due to digital technology  convenience  and social  /tribal popular branding.

In this spirit I proudly  re blog the brilliant  work on Ishmael Reed concerning  Muhammad  Ali by the irreverent and unabashed I MIX WHAT I LIKE collective led by Dr. Jared Ball.

As with my earlier YouTube repost  of Dr. Cornel West on ‘The Betrayal by the Black Elite’    play my  ‘Black Card’ ( one of many in my mixed heritage and identity). While many blacks on social media are  bemoaning  the tragedies like Ferguson ,  few genuinely present progressive or solutions oriented responses to these dangerous  times, doing a great disservice  to all , throwing up familiar   woe be unto us notions and circling their wagons around the accepted ‘faces ‘ of Black leadership. Un acceptable  .

I invite you to another dimension  of social media  discourse and if I lose ‘friends online  for my position ,  so be it.

Ishmael Reed

Venerable author Ishmael Reed joined us for this rousing conversation about his new book The Complete Muhammad Ali.  But as listeners (and readers of his book) will quickly note a good deal of Reed’s approach to the subject is through a critique of the society in which conversations about Ali, race, class, etc. take place.  So our conversation covered not only the distinct approach to Ali taken by Reed but also the idea of the Black token and White acceptance or criticism of Black thought and art.  We talked some about James Baldwin, Cornel West, Ta-Nehisi Coates and Melissa Harris-Perry about the Ali canon and Henry Louis Gates, Ben Affleck and more.  Plus we ran some good music from Paris, Amori and Tef Poe.
