Luc Besson Q&A: His Wildly Ambitious ‘Valerian;’ Why EuropaCorp’s RED Launch Isn’t Harmed By Relativity Woes

‘La Femme Nikita’ was the movie which introduced me to French film-maker Luc Besson back in 1987. This very moment I’m a short street block from Art House theatre ‘ The Vista’ here in Hollywood where I enjoyed Anne Parillaud as bad azz government agent Josephine/Nikita .
Now Besson has taken up shop in Hollywood and holding his financial and cinematic ground with Lucas, Spielberg and Cameron . C’est la vie .

EXCLUSIVE: Luc Besson has long held a comfortable identity as France’s answer to Spielberg, an idea generator who hatches commercial hits. From Paris, he and EuropaCorp partner Christophe Lambert built a powerhouse company on Besson’s imagination that has fueled a long string of moderately budgeted Euro-flavored thrillers that do big global business. Besson directs some himself; others he gifts to up and coming filmmakers. At 56, Besson has turned a cozy life on its ear, as he and Lambert prepare to bet bigger than just about any independently financed European film company has in recent memory. They moved their families to Hollywood, to work more closely with Hollywood writers and directors to ramp up a slate of films for RED, a new U.S. distribution and marketing pipeline that was formerly Overture Films. EuropaCorp purchased half that pipeline from Relativity Media 18 months ago. The plan was to half-fund the…

F. Gary Gray Q&A: The Hard Life Lessons That Led To ‘Straight Outta Compton’

L.A back in the early 90s, my Hip Hop video Bros all rolled with Gary , the trusted  young video   director  who had the ear of Ice Cube ,  DJ Quick, Snoop Dogg  and others . The crews  knew Gary  had the hook up in the very  tight  and new career  opportunity  for young black males. Looking  back it’s  amazing  the bold vision  as only BET had the national  reach ,  and even then conservative  Black America  periodically  condemned  gangsta rap, causing the TV outlets  to censor  hip hop content.

Even more reason to congratulate  Mr. Gray for presenting  N.W.A’s tale as much as his own as  a member  of a category  of Americana  deemed  ‘Menace to Society’. Success  is the  revenge , and as boxing impresario  Don King chanted , ‘Only in America  ‘.

EXCLUSIVE: Studio execs who thought of F. Gary Gray as a go-to guy for taut thrillers like The Italian Job, The Negotiator, Law Abiding Citizen and Be Cool already are reassessing as Straight Outta Compton opens tomorrow with rave reviews and strong box office expectations. The film chronicles the fast rise and fall of N.W.A and the birth of streetwise poets who reflected the poverty, gangs, drugs, guns and heavy-handed law enforcement that was part and parcel of living in the Los Angeles ghetto. The film is very personal for Gray, who is around the same age and grew up in South Central Los Angeles just miles from N.W.A members Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, MC Ren and DJ Yella. There is a Social Network atom-splitting depiction of the birth of an important cultural movement in Straight Outta Compton, and an underdog story of the struggle of young men…

‘Compton’s $60.2M Opening Is Tentpole Turf; ‘U.N.C.L.E.’ Doesn’t Find Relatives – Weekend Postmortem

My première blog on the Hollywood cinema world starts as I intend to continue . …bringing the best Hollywood insider reporting. NWA and Compton are in our collective psyche, and while I personally have concerns (which I will later address) , I wanted the best for you my readers.
Directamente desde Hollywood , CA . Saludos Y Salud .

7TH & 6TH UPDATE, Monday 4:30PM after 6:30 AM post with chart: Universal/Legendary’s Straight Outta Compton steamrolled its initial $40M-$50M projections this weekend with a $60.2M opening, easily making it the fifth-highest August opener ever. Rival distributors always knew that the F. Gary Gray-directed-film was going to overperform; it was a similar vibe they had during the weekend that American Sniper went wide.

Straight Outta ComptonEven more impressive, the musical biopic about hip-hop group N.W.A posted a FSS in tentpole territory, pegging ahead of such August openings as M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs ($60.1M), Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes ($54.8M) and G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra ($54.7M). Compton‘s weekend also outstrips the first weekends of such 2015 summer tentpoles as Ant-Man ($57.2M) and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation ($55.5M), which were playing in close to 1,200 more venues than the biopic’s 2,757-theater count. Compton attributes its success to a marketing campaign…

The Complete Muhammad Ali and Black Tokenism with Ishmael Reed

August  is our month of Black Hero celebration as opposed  to the cynically corporate  dominant Black History month of February .

My new Tiger/Tigre platform of commentary boldly challenges snug clichés and lazy and intellectually  /morally/spiritually  bankrupt narratives due to digital technology  convenience  and social  /tribal popular branding.

In this spirit I proudly  re blog the brilliant  work on Ishmael Reed concerning  Muhammad  Ali by the irreverent and unabashed I MIX WHAT I LIKE collective led by Dr. Jared Ball.

As with my earlier YouTube repost  of Dr. Cornel West on ‘The Betrayal by the Black Elite’    play my  ‘Black Card’ ( one of many in my mixed heritage and identity). While many blacks on social media are  bemoaning  the tragedies like Ferguson ,  few genuinely present progressive or solutions oriented responses to these dangerous  times, doing a great disservice  to all , throwing up familiar   woe be unto us notions and circling their wagons around the accepted ‘faces ‘ of Black leadership. Un acceptable  .

I invite you to another dimension  of social media  discourse and if I lose ‘friends online  for my position ,  so be it.

Ishmael Reed

Venerable author Ishmael Reed joined us for this rousing conversation about his new book The Complete Muhammad Ali.  But as listeners (and readers of his book) will quickly note a good deal of Reed’s approach to the subject is through a critique of the society in which conversations about Ali, race, class, etc. take place.  So our conversation covered not only the distinct approach to Ali taken by Reed but also the idea of the Black token and White acceptance or criticism of Black thought and art.  We talked some about James Baldwin, Cornel West, Ta-Nehisi Coates and Melissa Harris-Perry about the Ali canon and Henry Louis Gates, Ben Affleck and more.  Plus we ran some good music from Paris, Amori and Tef Poe.
